Ubuntu 11.10 Ready for Prime Time

I will have a video of the new interface later on, but for now here are some of the highlights via Ars Technica.

Codenamed Oneiric Ocelot, the new version of Ubuntu has made improvements to the Unity dash including cleaning up the main interface and working on a 2D version of the Unity shell allowing machines with lower system specs to run the dash without breaking a sweat.

Thunderbird has now become the default email client booting out the long standing Evolution client (thank god), along with a slew of other improvements:

  • New Alt+Tab switcher
  • New "music lens" included on the Unity Dash which plays nice with Banshee and Ubuntu One
  • Ubuntu One music collections are now streamable to Android and and iOS devises
  • Improved launcher/panel performance
  • Upgrade to Ubuntu Software Center 5.0 with improved navigation features, application sorting based on user ratings, and dynamic application lists/banners
  • Two new ARM sub-architectures are compatible with 11.10
  • Upgrade to GNOME 3.2 (GNOME classic is no longer installed by default)
  • Synaptics is no longer installed by default but can be added through the Software Center
Much more can be found on the Ubuntu website and to find out more try it out for yourself!  Video tour to follow later.
